so back to the m&s grill

November 21st, 2008

here’s what’s so great about he m&s grill…

m&s grill on the plaza

1. it’s on the plaza, mere steps from the penthouse.

2. happy hour, every day except friday.  yes, there are interesting drinks.  yes, a nice glass of wine is under 6 bucks.  but here’s where the m&s grill does it up right: a 4-part happy hour menu — food selections for 2, 3, 4 or 5 bucks. and these aren’t “half-price apps!”  they’re thoughtful, sometimes simple dishes that are well done.  for 2 bucks, for instance, a cheese quesadilla* with a chili/garlic aoli*.  it’s simple and tremendous. for 5 bucks, pot roast sliders, mashed potatoes and gravy.  pot roast sliders?  now that’s creative. and they’re great. i HATE pot roast. (i’m being serious as evidenced through my oh-so-rare use of caps). yet i find myself drawn to every dish they make using pot roast. the pot roast nachos are…are…wow.

there’s good stuff in all price categories, about 16 total dishes.  (you can have the carpaccio*…i’m not goin’ near that stuff.  ick.)

3. big-ass chocolate truffle cookies for a buck.  (neil…can i say “big-ass?”)

indeed, happy hour at the m&s grill is so good, i’m having a hard time going to other happy hours…and there are plenty here on the plaza.

penthouse clear.

back to breakfast….

November 18th, 2008

remember the kitchen sink?  see below if you don’t.

one of the goals in my glorious romp through life is to find the best saturday morning breakfast in kansas city.  if you’re asking why is has to be a saturday morning breakfast and you don’t know what i do for a living, then i forgive you.  just accept that it’s gotta be saturday.

-succotash (or however it’s spelled).  did it. reviewed it. haven’t had the inkling to go back yet.

this week: town topic.  what?  it’s a burger joint.  but, okay.  why not.
town topic
i chose the town topic on johnson drive (not this one but i dig the lincoln) because i knew the likelihood of getting a place to sit was higher there.  it’s not huge, but bigger than the two downtown. i go in, i look at the menu and there’s the truck stop omelet. 4 eggs, meat of choice (sausage of course), hashbrowns (in the omelet), peppers, onions and toast.  just to keep things even, i ordered some gravy on the side.

the omelet was huge. easily enough for two.  the potatoes were crispy, the onions and peppers done just right and the omelet itself was perfect (you know, perfect color, consistent thickness and perfectly removed from the griddle making you wonder how they do that?). the additional gravy was non-descript and required salt.  and, actually it was unnecessary.

town topic’s truck stop now floats highest in the saturday morning kitchen sink. total price, just north of 10 bucks.  seems steep to me considering we’re talking about town topic, but in the end, absolutely worth it.

attack of the vlog

November 18th, 2008

theoretically, i vlog as well.  problem is, it’s tough to get the camera weasels to come out of their holes so early in the morning to stand behind the lens and help produce something.

so i’m going rogue.

stay tuned.  and don’t tell ellen.

rock’n'roll.

a thrilling sunday at the dole, with bush 41

November 16th, 2008

“what a thrill!”

that’s all that comes to mind after spending 2 hours at ku’s lied center this afternoon, first in a reception for george herbert walker bush and then in a ceremony honoring him as this year’s dole leadership prize recipient.

the 41st president of the united states was selected for the award this year for his service to the united states and the world as well (especially given his efforts to raise funds and awareness in the wake of several natural disasters).

at 84, he is slower than you may remember. he appeared to steady himself now and again (noting at one point that he wasn’t getting fresh with one attractive ku senior, just leaning on her for support). but what a gracious, self-deprecating, genuine and funny man. wow.

the president spoke to the reception for perhaps 2-3 minutes, the highlight of which was his telling us that if anyone else asked where barbara was, he’d kill us. that got quite the laugh. she, obviously, wasn’t there but he says she’s fine.

in the main event, the president was interviewed by the head of the dole institute, bill lacy.  the questions ranged from policy, to relationships (he described ronald reagan much as i have described g.h.w.b. — kind, gracious, genuine) to his greatest achievement (which he thinks may be operation desert storm because of its lightning fast success as well as the fact that it brought the u.s. military back to prominence and restored respect which had declined after viet nam).

some of the most memorable moments involved his explanation of why he didn’t go to berlin to celebrate the falling of the wall.  he says that in not doing so, his counterpart in the ussr stayed in power, the result of which was the further spread of democracy and reform.  he talked about his relationship to bill clinton, recounted a story where the two went on their first trip overseas after the tsunami. clinton deferred to the elder bush, letting him have the only sleeping quarters on the plane.  when bush emerged from the bedroom, he found the 42nd president of the united states wrapped in a blanket, sleeping on the floor.

and maybe the biggest chuckles of the afternoon came when he did his impression of dana carvey doing his impression of bush 41.  in talking about carvey, he noted that he had done some stand-up with dana within the last couple of weeks and that unlike so many comics today, carvey was never mean and thus the two have developed a rapport.

in terms of logistics, i was surprised that there was no security screening (which wouldn’t have helped with the handful of jerks who were appropriately thrown out of the main ceremony for rudely interrupting with incomprehensible protests.  it happened 3 times and each time, the audience grew less tolerant.  the prez handled it well at one point saying he was old and deaf and couldn’t understand what they were saying. later he remarked that such disruptions don’t bother him anymore.)

all in all, wow.  what a thrill.  what a great man.  what a great afternoon.

(and dinner at teller’s in downtown lawrence was the perfect way to top it off.  the butternut squash gnocchi were good if not a bit too subtle in taste.  but the duck confit was among the best i’ve ever had. served with sauteed peppers and onions which provided a sweet contrast, the salty duck fell from the bone as it should. but unlike so many other renditions of this dish, it was served on the bone, encased in its very crispy skin — not swimming in fat and a random reduction.  the bread served with olive oil is from a local bakery. some of the best european artisan bread i’ve had in the midwest.  the baguette is a real baguette.  the rustic italian -or hungarian- bread was light on the inside and thickly crusted outside. can you tell i liked the dinner almost as much as the bush 41 event?)

rock’n'roll.

Happy Hour part 1

November 13th, 2008

okay, gonna run dual tracks on food.  i’ve started reviewing local joints for breakfast (see previous post about the kitchen sink).  now, it’s happy hour.  going to work way before sunrise has it’s advantages…about the time i’m ready to think about going to bed, happy hour is ending.  so that means, if i find the right place, i can get great food at a great price.

the first experience with this was the hereford house…long before it burned.  matter of fact, it was so long ago, that i have little to say about it.

so we’ll start our happy hour series with what is now my clear happy hour favorite and the happy hour against which all others will be judged:

m&s grill logo

the m&s grill on the east end of the plaza.  it’s between p.f. changs and figlio’s (don’t get me started on figlio’s).  it is one of only half a dozen m&s grills in the country and the m&s comes from mccormick and schmick’s – it’s their steakhouse brand.

let’s be clear on what makes a good happy hour for me.  sure, there needs to be a good price on a glass of wine, beer or some other appropriate adult beverage(s), but the food is key.  i’m looking to eat well, not just have a drink.

with that in mind…check back for the details.  (happy hour is over…it’s time for bed.)

rock’n'roll.

What a week!

November 9th, 2008

it’s sunday evening at 1800 (military time is so exact. i love it!) and i have just awakened.  i fell asleep at 1800 on friday evening and haven’t been awake since. it was such a week, so much going on, history made, short nights, long days and lots of excitement.  in short, it was the kind of week we live for.

i have to tell you that when you host a morning news program, there’s nothing as exciting (and taxing) as a big election. you spend alot of time (in this case two years) building up to it, finding the right interviews, making sure they come on, and coaxing them to give you as much insight as possible in a limited amount of time. everyone on the team pushes everyone they know to get the interviews with the big names. i’m not sure (because i can’t listen to every show) but i doubt any other k.c. radio program had obama, mccain and biden as often as we did on kansas city’s morning news (i’m sure everyone had palin on as often as we did).

you work to make sure you cover both sides of an issue and both candidates in a race and you answer the letters accusing you of being biased one way or the other.

then the day before comes and the tension mounts.  every campaign is calling trying to book that one person that will resonate most with listeners.  the day of, things start to cook.  trouble at the polls, some voter registries get delivered to the wrong precincts (anybody lose a gig over that one??), long lines and overall excitement all-around.  and then at 2200 hours kc time on tuesday night, history.

wednesday, the analysis continues. why did mccain lose?  what do people think of the winner?  what was the role of race in the race?  then the rumors:  a national magazine says palin can’t spell her own name and doesn’t know how to make a grilled cheese.  at least south park did what it does best.

by the end of the week, heck, by the end of his victory speech, the prez-elect was trying to lower expectations, find his appointees (and balance “change” with the apparent desire to pick “insiders”) and deal with the economy without any power to actually do so. saturday night live slides back into obscurity by playing a rerun.  and columnists look ahead to p.e. obama’s first visit to 1600 pa av since winning by recounting his first visit to the white house (what do people have against hand sanitizer?  it’s washington.  i’d have an aide at the ready with a squirt too!).

at the end of it all, we get a new president. a new approach.  new stories.

and if the new presidential administration fails to provide enough interesting content (which i doubt will be the case), no doubt local politics will (as that funky volunteer ordinance proved on friday).
