parks brought it up this afternoon (i think it was right after talking about his exceedingly high level of preparedness for this afternoon’s show — which time you ask?) and oddly enough, i was THIS close to mentioning it to ellen this morning on the air: we need cameras in the studio.
indeed, for awhile, there was the discussion of simulcasting “kansas city’s morning news with e.j. and ellen” on a time warner access channel so that folks who listen the tv on in the morning (why listen to people who need pictures to tell you a story?) could listen to news and information designed specifically for listening. and as an extra added bonus if they wanted to look at the screen, they’d have something goofy to look at (and ellen too).
what happened to those discussions? they need to start up again.
it’s the stuff that goes on when the red button is off that’s REALLY interesting. it’s the looks that we shoot each other when mark gets exasperated. it’s the subtle shift in ellen’s brow when she’s ready to throw something right at my head. it’s the joy of sitting at home, watching other people (us) rip the keyboard out from the computer and slam it repeatedly against the marble-topped workstation when things just go oh-so-not-quite right. and all the while…you notice almost nothing untoward on the air (until we pick our victim of they day and lay blame squarely at his/her feet — and neil, it’s you the rest of the week).
i’m with ya parks. it’s time for cameras. (but i’m still not wearin’ a tie.)

remember when letterman was on nbc and would go into the audience and play his little game “brush with greatness” and people would tell their stories about meeting a famous person?
wednesday, jack bauer was in the building doing something he’s never done on 24…using the bathroom.
and it’s odd but that’s where i seem to run into famous people in this building…in the bathroom. it’s usually johnny dare (making comments about functions that will get him fined if he mentions them on air — that must be why he says them on the pot), but this time it was keifer sutherland.

jack’s not that tall. he was softspoken, pleasant and gracious. and that’s not necessarily what you would expect from a guy who has only two volume levels: 1) screaming before he kills you and 2) whispering before he kills you.
but the best thing about jack bauer, he washes hands before shaking.
now we can all really feel safe.

it’s there for a reason (ellen). it tells me what you’re sending in the email. it helps me know (parks) if your email is deserving of special attention. (this is where both ellen and parks say something like “if you see my name attached to the email…”)
seriously, is it just me or does it drive anyone else bonkers when the subject line is populated with a mere “RE:” or perhaps the ever-so ambiguous “untitled subject”?
i’d much rather see “hey, contact me now about your lottery winnings” or “pleasure is just a click away”.
actually, regardless which of the foregoing subjects resides in the subject line, the result is the same: click, goodbye.

anybody else notice that when i’m not feeling well, ellen makes it sound like i’m still in school? “e.j.’s home sick today.”
anyway, here’s your behind the scenes look at thursday. what to do for a sore throat before it becomes a full blown cold or flu: tom ka gai soup (without wasting your time finding a decent thai restaurant in kansas city.)

take two fresh chicken breasts. clean, salt and then slice into small, very thin pieces. bring about 2 cups chicken stock to a boil in a large sauce pan. add half a large onion, sliced thin, add the chicken, chopped carrots, green peppers, diced tomatoes and green chillies. let simmer for awhile.
now add some more stock, a can of coconut milk, a touch of heavy cream for consistency and about 3-4 tbl spoons of lemon juice (fresh limes are better, but if you don’t have any, well…). let simmer some more, adjust ingredients and spices to taste, and BOOM. all better. or at least not feeling well tastes better!

i, like so many west wing fans was not only disappointed when the series was canceled, but saddened when leo (john spencer) died of a heart attack (for real) during the final season.
so imagine my shock when saturday night at the m&s grill (where else?) i end up next to leo.

you set the tone leo.
